A Mission to Make Safety Second Nature
In Las Vegas, one veteran’s passion for teaching firearms safety has grown into a trusted community hub for responsible gun ownership.
On a crisp morning at the Clark County Shooting Complex, the rhythmic crack of gunfire echoes across the desert. Roscoe, a retired military instructor with a calm voice and steady hands, stands beside a young couple nervously holding their first handguns. He adjusts their grip, reminds them to breathe, and then smiles as their shots land on target. For Roscoe, this moment is not about hitting bullseyes; it is about building confidence and ensuring safety.
From Service to Civilian Life
Roscoe spent twenty-seven years in the military, first in the Army and later in the Air Force. While his service gave him countless experiences, one skill remained a constant thread throughout: teaching others how to handle firearms.
“I was an instructor in the military, so after I retired, I wanted to keep doing something I was passionate about,” Roscoe explains. “We were lucky enough to slide into this position and get the business up and running.”
What began as Sheepdog Tactical has since evolved into Nevada CCW, a name that more directly reflects its mission. Today, Nevada CCW provides firearms training for everyone, from teenagers learning about safety for the first time to seasoned shooters seeking advanced courses. Roscoe and his team are also certified to provide concealed carry weapons (CCW) instruction for Nevada, Utah, and Arizona.
A Safer Path for New Gun Owners
Roscoe noticed something early on that sparked his mission. “For years and years, I’ve been buying guns and talking to people about guns,” he says. “A lot of people don’t understand gun safety, how to operate a firearm, or how to be safe with it. If everybody’s going to be out buying guns, maybe we should put a program together to make sure they know how to use them safely and correctly.”
That philosophy underpins every class Nevada CCW offers. The courses go beyond the state’s minimum requirements, giving students hands-on time with instructors, range safety officers, and peers who share the same commitment to responsible ownership.
“Our goal is to eliminate accidental discharges and injuries,” Roscoe explains. “We want people to be able to protect themselves without hurting themselves.”
Built on Trust and Referrals
From the very beginning, Nevada CCW has grown primarily through word of mouth. Students who complete a class often bring friends, family members, or coworkers the next time. “Most of our business is referral,” Roscoe says with pride. “We teach a solid course, and people seem to enjoy it. They like that we teach them instead of teaching to the generic. It keeps them coming back.”
That personalized approach extends to open range days, where former students are invited to return and practice alongside instructors in a supportive environment. “We spend time with our customers to make sure they understand their firearms,” Roscoe says. “We want them to be better shooters, but most importantly, safer shooters.”
Expanding Beyond the Range
Nevada CCW is not stopping at firearms training. Recognizing that emergencies often extend beyond the scope of self-defense, Roscoe recently partnered with a certified paramedic to launch courses in CPR, AED use, and Stop the Bleed training.
“We’re starting a medical course this month,” he says. “If someone is involved in a situation, they should be able to render first aid. It’s another way to make sure our community is prepared.”
The business is also preparing to certify security guards in Las Vegas, ensuring that professionals on the front lines of safety have up-to-date training and knowledge. To meet the demand, Roscoe has brought on three additional instructors, including a retired law enforcement officer and another military veteran. “I like to bring in people with specialties,” he says. “We take those skills and put them into the courses so we can provide even better training.”
More Than a Business, A Family
Spend a day with Nevada CCW, and it becomes clear that this is more than a transactional experience. “It’s almost like a big family,” Roscoe says. “We all want to make sure everybody’s safe and that they can protect themselves. The people who come to us share that same mindset.”
Part of that family-focused culture comes from Roscoe’s own background. As a disabled retired veteran, he carries a deep respect for first responders and those who serve. “Any first responder that comes in here, we always discount, and we go above and beyond to make sure they’re taken care of,” he says.
Why Nevada CCW Matters
In a city known for its bright lights and fast pace, Nevada CCW offers something slower, steadier, and vital: peace of mind. By teaching responsible firearms handling and extending that mission into medical preparedness, the business is helping build a community that is not just armed but educated, careful, and ready to step up in moments of crisis.
It is no surprise that referrals keep flowing. Students do not just walk away with a certificate; they leave with confidence, practical skills, and the reassurance that they are part of a supportive network.
Looking Ahead with Purpose
As Nevada CCW continues to grow, Roscoe’s vision remains the same. “We want to continue to grow and keep the knowledge growing in our business,” he says. “Our mission is to make sure every person who trains with us walks away safer, more confident, and more prepared.”
For anyone in Nevada considering firearms training, Nevada CCW offers more than just instruction. It offers a community, a philosophy of safety, and the steady guidance of an instructor who has dedicated his life to teaching others.
